Elite athlete Doo Hoi-kem wins bronze in FISU World University Games in Chengdu

EdUHK sent a total of 17 students to join the Hong Kong delegation to compete in the 31st summer event of the FISU World University Games held in Chengdu between 28 July and 8 August, 2023. Hong Kong’s team won a record-breaking total of four gold medals, one silver medal and seven bronze medals in the competition. Doo Hoi Kem, an elite athlete student from the Bachelor of Health Education (Honours) programme, won two bronze medals in the table tennis competition.

Partnering with Soo Wai-yam and Lam Yee-lok, Doo Hoi-kem won the bronze medal of the Women's Team Event in table tennis. She won another bronze medal in the Mixed Doubles Event with her teammate Ho Kwan-kit. Doo’s accolades were both her and EdUHK’s first medals in table tennis at the World University Games.

The elite table tennis player said competing in Chengdu was a memorable and pleasant experience for her. “I would like to show my gratitude to EdUHK for supporting my dual pursuit of academic study and athletic excellence. Its support facilitated me to attain higher achievements in sports,” she said.

Hong Kong sent a team of over 140 student athletes, including 16 students studying at the Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE) and one student from another department at EdUHK, to compete in 11 different sports in the biennial competition in Chengdu. We want to send a big congratulations to Doo and other members of the Hong Kong team for obtaining such excellent results for Hong Kong.

Held biannually, the FISU World University Games is the world’s largest multi-sport event that college students can participate in. There were more than 9,500 student athletes competing in 18 sports categories in the Chengdu games.
